"Why did you leave our campsite, Princess?" Fred asked Astra.

Astra was barefoot, having lost her slippers [947] when swimming in the underground river [953 or 1432]. She used her heel to write in the sand: I was collecting some more firewood. I only meant to be away for a few minutes, but then I entered their damned ring. A moment later everything went black, and the next thing I knew I was dangling from that tree- branch.

It had taken Astra several minutes to write that much. Fortunately Fred's next questions only needed one word answers: "You must be hungry by now? And thirsty?"

Yes. Yes. In fact her throat was so dry by this time that she suspected that had she been able to speak she wouldn't have been able to speak!

1. Luckily Fred still had his pack (which was waterproof), with some supplies in it.
2. Fred had lost his pack when he was washed up on the beach, [30] so they needed to find food and fresh water. (He had started the fire [1426] by using the rapid rotation of a pointed stick on a bit of bark.)
