Fred had more sense than to voice his thought out loud, of course. A few
minutes later, to his relief he spotted the glowing embers of his fire,
which had almost burnt out in the long time that he had been away. But now
he had another worry. In spite of the thorough job which he had made of
securing the elf, might he have escaped? He imagined that successfully
restraining an elf for a prolonged period was likely to be much harder
than it would be with a human.
But to his enormous relief, as they drew near he could see that the elf was still there, tied up in a ball as he had been left. He must surely have regained consciousness long ago, but Fred imagined that he must be very stiff from his prolonged period in such an unnatural position. At least, he must be if elves were anything like humans in that regard. "At last!" the Queen said. She bent down, and hefted the elf - still tied up - over her shoulder as though he weighed almost nothing. Then she broke into an easy lope, heading out of the clearing. "Hey, what about our agreement?" Fred shouted after her. "I will keep it," she called back. "You and the woman may leave. But since I have been so much delayed by your incompetence, I am not going to waste more time by going back to the tree with you. You can go back there and cut her down yourself." "But..." Fred started to object, before he realised that the Queen had already vanished among the trees. Sighing, he attempted to retrace his steps. Dawn was beginning to break by the time he eventually managed to locate the tree where Astra had spent such an uncomfortable night. She was still gently spinning on the end of the rope. She must have wondered what could have taken him so long, and perhaps feared that he had come to harm and that she would never be freed. When she saw him she smiled with relief, but oddly she did not speak. Then he realised. The bitch didn't remove Astra's silence spell. Did she just forget, or was she being vindictive?
