In the nick of time, it occurred to Hesht that Astra had not been
guilty of illegal duelling. It was true that she had challenged Gog to a
duel but, owing to Magog's intervention with his staff, that duel had
never actually taken place. Therefore Astra had not committed any unlawful
act, so far as he could see. So he could safely tell the davar the
truth. That was a relief. (It did not occur to him that the act of
proposing a duel might in itself be illegal.)
When Hesht had finished, the davar considered what he had been told. He had thought that Astra had been telling him the truth, except in taking responsibility for the duel, which he had assumed that she had done in order to protect Hesht. But as a foreigner would she have known that duelling was generally illegal in Hespan? Now he had Hesht telling what was, in all essentials, a story consistent with hers. What sort of woman would challenge a man to a duel? He answered his own question: An Aqualarian noblewoman might. They all receive weapons training, if the stories that I have heard are correct. If she really challenged Gog to a duel, that would tend to support her story of being from Aqualaria and someone of some importance. Seeing Hesht looking at him in some apprehension, he realised that he had been silent for some considerable time whilst he mulled things over. "Thank you," he said.
