The nearest observers had not been close enough to see precisely what had
occurred. But they had heard the wizard raise his voice to cry: "MY
UNHOLY VENGEANCE!", which had caught their attention. Then Fred had
appeared to dive at the wizard, who now lay lifeless on the sand, so they
drew the obvious conclusion. Fred - without a thought for his own safety,
and no doubt in order to protect the woman - had bravely tackled Wilhem,
who had a very bad reputation, and had killed him.
Fred found himself being borne aloft by his crowd of admirers. At first he protested weakly: "But I didn't mean to..." But nobody took any notice, and he soon stopped trying to explain what had really happened. He had never been a hero before, and he decided that he might as well make the most of the experience. Besides, he had tried to be brave, even if the satisfactory end result had been a matter of luck, so didn't he deserve the acclaim? "You must be very proud of him," a woman said to Astra, as they followed the group carrying Fred up the beach.. "Oh yes, I certainly am," she replied, managing with difficulty to keep a straight face. It would be mean of her to rain on Fred's parade, she felt. After all, he had tried to protect her, even if he was really the one who needed protection. "Is he your husband?" the woman asked, "No." "Your boyfriend?" the woman persisted. "No." "What, then?" the nosy woman wanted to know.
