"I don't understand this," Astra said. "This is quite a major road that we're on, and I can see that it resumes again on the other side. There's no bridge, I see no sign of a ferry, and the river is too deep to ford. Surely we can't be expected to swim across?"

"If we did, we'd have to leave the horse behind, which would make the rest of the journey very slow. But remembering how much magic seems to be used in this land, I suspect that there is some magical way of getting across, if only we knew how to invoke it."

  1. Minestus knew how they could get across, and they soon heard his voice in their heads.
  2. They managed to work out how to get across.
  3. They were reduced to swimming across the river. At least Astra's illusory dress wouldn't get wet!
