Lucieno found Fred and Astra, together with Velus, in the former's room,
having a slightly delayed breakfast. They had thought it better to have
their breakfast sent up, rather than going down to the dining room, where
Astra might have attracted unwanted attention.
"It appears that Cedric the Elder was the victim of a gypsy curse," he told them. "I found a bat skull in his room. I've left it there for the investigators to find. I had been afraid that Astra might come under suspicion for his murder, as being so obviously an outsider, but now I don't think that we need worry." "It hadn't occurred to me that I might be a suspect, though I suppose that it should have," Astra said. "I take it that we won't be able to leave for the time being, though?" "No. I'm sure that whoever is responsible for enforcing the law in these parts will want to question us all. To leave in advance of that would at best be seen as disrespectful and at worst might be taken as implying that one of us was responsible for Cedric's death." "What if we are asked what we are doing in these parts?" Fred asked. "Just say that you are escorting Ambaric, which is true enough if not the whole truth."
