A Davar's Responsibility

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 58937

"I know only vaguely about Aqualarian law and procedure. But I think that a trial in Hespan means something different than what you may be used to. I know that in certain nations, men are picked from a pool to serve as judges, and guilt or innocence is decided by vote. In some places this pool of men is called a jury. But the truth is not something that is a matter of averaging the opinion of six, twelve, or twenty men. Finding the truth should be entrusted to a man who has been trained, has experience, and whose judgment the city trusts. As the davar, it is my duty to find that truth. I am talking to you now hoping to get closer to it. I have also talked to a number of others. Now, after the truth is found, I will talk to the elders of Darvazde Yepenhan, and then the proper sanction shall be applied to any who broke the law. If part of the sanction requires that you come back to Hespan, a request for your presence shall be made to the Duke of Penhan. He would certainly grant it. However, if your conscience is clean, you should not be worried."

"So I am at your mercy then? What is to prevent a davar from abusing his power?"

"I have spent my life building my reputation, khanomam. What could anyone possibly give me that would be worth the risk of disgrace? The citizens would find out, and then my authority would be at an end."

"So a davar has never made a mistake?"

"It is a grave responsibility, and one to be taken very seriously. I must answer to God and the King. One more question, Astra khanomam. When you met these two men on the road, what were you and Hesht carrying?"

"I had little more than the clothes on my back. I had a knife, but it was taken at Still Manor. Hesht had no weapons that I could see. We did have some food that he took from a cache in the woods. Hesht might have had some more things. I know that he had some seeds, perhaps a few coins, and may have had some sort of medicines or small trading items. Now that I am talking about it, he did have a strange liquid that I had used as a sort of knife sheath, that quickly dried into a short of hard clay. And he was looking for something else in the cache, but it had been stolen."

The davar nodded his head, and looked like he was satisfied with her answer. He said, "Thank you for the interview, especially while you are suffering so. I shall be leaving in the evening, but shall be in town to chat with an old friend before returning to Darvadze Yepenhan. I shall send word on the condition of your guide when I get back."

"Thank you. Are you going to be judging the truth of Gilder's charge as well? If Gilder is both accuser and judge, how can I be judged fairly?"

The davar answered,

  1. "That matter is out of my jurisdiction, but ..."
