"However," he went on, "I would consider that unlikely. I would assume
there would have been more archers among them, for a start. A dragon
attack is also the last thing they'd be expecting. The peace between
Helsingdon and Esputa may be tenuous, but unlikely to be broken by either
side. According to the colonel, most of the surrounding countries seem to
think that the dragons are owned by the Helsingdonian military, rather
than free agents. There is really no reason why the Esputans should think
otherwise."
Astra thought about this. "So you think the guerillas aren't as well trained as the soldiers who killed Steadfast's mate?" "That's it, exactly," came the reply. There was a pause as if Henri was suddenly entertaining doubts about what he had said. It was followed by a swift change of subject in an attempt to cover it up. "There's something that bothers me. When you told me about your friend Fred, why did you use the word 'world'? Is it because the dragons here are so unlike the ones where you come from that they can't exist in the same world as one another?" Astra was baffled by this sudden change, but still managed to say, "Well, yes, I suppose I do. Couldn't that be possible?" There was an even longer silence this time. Henri realised that he had made a bad choice before finally conceding that it was hardly something he gave much thought about. No more words were spoken about this or any other subject.
