Oh, dear. And considering that the minumum amount the ATM would let her
take out was $20, this meant she didn't even have money to buy doughnuts.
And finding out who she was and where she lived had just become even more
imperative, or she'd be sleeping on the streets tonight. She retrieved her
ATM card, then looked once again at the doughnut-shop reciept. It bore
today's date -- a date she was only aware of after checking her digital
watch -- and was time-stamped only five hours before. With luck, the
person she'd bought the doughnuts from might even still be on shift. With
a great deal more luck, they might even know who she was. Nervously, she walked up to the counter in the doughnut shop. The shop was empty except for one person behind the counter, who looked at her expectantly. "Um, hello," she began. "I know this is going to sound really strange, but... Do you know who I am?" The young man looked at her in surprise for a moment and said:
