Life is a stage

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 58102

Looking up from examining her new self, the vixen felt a rush of panic at the sight of the humans surrounding her. With a surprised yelp she jumped to her feet, pushed Robert aside and bounded nimbly over the side of the boat.

To everyone's surprise, including her own, she landed with a soft thump and kept running rather than sink. After about ten paces the sea and sky faded away around her, and she found herself standing on a solid plank floor in a vast, darkened room. As her eyes quickly adjusted, she realized she was standing on the stage of an old theatre building. Fortunately it was mostly empty, so she hadn't interrupted a show, just a rehearsal. The few (furry) people around still had something to say about it though.

"Okay, take five," the director sighed. "What's the matter, Vixxie? Are you alright?"

The sound of her name seemed to have a stabilizing influence, and soon it was all coming back to her. Vixxie remembered coming to the big city from out of the forest in search of fame and fortune, and joining a theatre troup that promised her both in exchange for a lot of hard work.
She remembered all that. However. she also remembered being a human called Frederigo stranded on a deserted island and taking off to sea with a bunch of weirdos. She turned to look for the 'boat' and saw a crude set piece (usually covered with illusion spells) containing her fellow actors - a badger, a badger and a mushroom. Or rather, once the last illusion spell had finished winding down, a badger (some things don't need changing), a young deer and some kind of lizard creature.

Remembering that illusion spells some times have weird effects, she turned again to scowl at the effects wizard, and found him reeling and clutching at his forehead. "Please, Vixxie!" he moaned. "I get such a headache when you break my concentration!"

"Sorry," Vixxie muttered feebly as she went back to ponder her new double memories. Fred's story was nothing like the play they were rehearsing, but was is just an illusion, or were they both equally true? She had heard some wild stories, mostly from drunken magicians, about people getting joined across dimensional barriers. If they were true, she and Fred were one now. They would always have a double set of memories, and their physical shape would depend on which world they were in. She could go 'back' and be Fred adrift at sea 'again', or she could stay and be a possibly successful actress...

  1. She goes back to the real boat. Maybe her new memories can help Fred & Co. somehow?
  2. She stays. Who in her right mind would go back to those losers anyway?
  3. She takes the effects wizard aside to discuss the unexpected development and provide a bit of personal treatment for his headache.
  4. She starts crying like a little kit.
  5. She yells "I quit!" and storms out of the building.
  6. Meanwhile, back on the (real) boat...
