"The ruby is the source of my power, Master," the genie replied.
"What would happen if it was removed?" Bob wanted to know. "It must be worth a king's ransom." "It cannot be removed, except by very powerful magic. If that was to happen, I should lose all my power, and perhaps would even die." "That's very interesting," Brandy said, "but we were telling you about how this Sir Fred has slain the dragon." He looked at the genie anxiously, but she showed no visible reaction, so he carried on: "It happened a couple of weeks ago. When we heard, we thought that we would come here and see if there was any of his treasure to be found." "Even if the dragon is dead, these caves are still not a very safe place. I advise you and the Master to leave." "We might as well do that," Bob said. "With the three wishes, we can get all the wealth we could ever want." "If you believe her," Brandy said, still not entirely convinced. Bob ignored him, and turned back to the genie. "I should have asked you this before, but what's your name? I'm Bob and this is Brandy, by the way." She frowned, as if in thought. "I know your names. I too had a name once, I think, but I no longer remember it. You and your friend may simply call me Genie, Master." "Are you able to come and go from the lamp as you please?" "I can enter the lamp whenever I choose, unless you order me not to, but I can only leave it when you summon me by rubbing it." "One final question. Why are you naked?" "I do not know, Master. In my time in the lamp - and as I said I cannot tell how long that was - I have always been naked. I cannot remember anything before that. I can conjure up clothing for myself if that would please you."
