A couple of hours later, Astra was woken from a sound, dreamless sleep by a disturbance in the corridor outside. Someone was singing, out of tune and very loudly. Astra suspected that whoever it was must be very drunk. Presumably a new guest had arrived after she had fallen asleep, and had asked the magical custodian of the inn for plenty of strong drink. Why were they out in the corridor, though?

Gently moving Velus from his position lying on top of her feet, without waking him, she went to investigate.

  1. The singer was now lying face down in the corridor, apparently having just passed out.
  2. The man broke off from his singing when he saw her. "Hello, fair damsel," he said. "Would you care to join me in a duet?" Astra bristled.
  3. To her surprise, the singer was not a new arrival after all, but Fred. How had he become so drunk, and what was he doing out in the corridor?
  4. But the corridor was empty!
