"Before we set off, I'll need some armour and a weapon," Astra said.

"No you won't," Sir Lottalance contradicted her.

"I won't?"

"Of course not. You can't be a knight, seeing as you're a woman. But you can be a camp follower if you like. You're dressed - or I ought to say undressed - perfectly for that."

"But I'm not camp. I'm bu-... I mean I'm female."

"Not much doubt about that. But I didn't mean that sort of camp. A camp follower is a woman who accompanies the knights to war and ministers to their needs."
