Amongst their equipment, both Astra and Henri were provided with a
whistle, with which they could summon assistance from their "escort" if
necessary. Both of them suspected that their hunt was likely to be
fruitless. Having half a dozen soldiers a hundred yards or so away was
likely to frighten away any wildlife, for however hard they tried to keep
quiet so many men were bound to make some noise. But at least the two of
them should have a pleasant few hours exercise out in the open air. And
the soldiers would get some useful training in how to remain stealthy in
the forest, which was no doubt at least partly why the captain had agreed
to provide them rather than simply refuse Astra's request to be allowed to
go hunting.
The hunt proved to be as unproductive as Henri and Astra had expected it would be, but even so it was an enjoyable few hours.
