The Gnome Explains

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 56661

"I appreciate that the tests that I had to carry out must have been very painful for you and the lady Astra," the gnome went on. "I wouldn't have believed that it was possibly for anyone to scream so loudly through a gag as you two did. Until I can analyse the results of those tests, which may take some time, I'm afraid that I shall have to keep you gagged and manacled, but at least you won't have to suffer any more pain."

Fred attempted to ask a question, but he found that it made his throat hurt even more and that in any case nothing intelligible emerged through the gag. However the gnome evidently guessed what the question might have been. "You want to know why the gag and manacles?" Fred nodded.

"Well, I can't afford to risk that you and your companion might be spellcasters. Without souls, you two could be very evil and very dangerous. Your story was a good one, but I'm afraid that it was rather improbable, and I can't afford to take any chances. But if the results of the tests are satisfactory, then I will free you both, and the dog too."

He paused a moment, then said: "I imagine that your throat is rather painful. I had to scrape some tissue from it for my tests. I have a potion that will soothe it and aid its healing. Would you like some? Of course, I can't remove your gag, but I can make a small hole in it. I can pass a hollow tube through the hole and into your mouth, through which you can suck up the liquid. I call the device a straw, as in its shape it's rather like a real straw."

  1. Fred indicates that he would like to have the potion.
  2. Fred declines, not trusting the gnome.
  3. Meanwhile, what of Astra, on whom one of the gnome's tests has had a strange side effect?
