When he had arranged for Stacy to be slipped the amnesia-inducing drug in
her coffee earlier that day, Stephen had expected her to find her way to
him before long. There were large displays of Mistake in almost every book
store in town, and she was bound to see one of them and to note the
resemblance to herself. After that, it would be natural for her to seek
him out in the hope of finding out something about herself.
And the entry on his desk calendar? When he had heard Stacy's voice in his outer office, screaming at his secretary, he had quickly entered "2:30 Stacy Jones". She would be sure to notice it, and it would help to keep her off balance. That would help with his seeming "rescue" of her from what was actually his own plot. "Feeling calmer?" he asked Stacy. "Perhaps you feel able to tell me what the problem is now?" "I'm sorry for losing it like that, Mr Allar, but I'm very on edge. You see, I've lost my memory.
