The Never Ending Quest - Episode 55555

"All I know was," Chuck Cunningham softly spoke as he and Lord Fred walked down the seemingly endless stretch of two-lane blacktop, "there was a huge blackout that affected just about everywhere from Chicago all the way up to Marquette, Michigan, and-"
"Chicago? Marquette what?" asks Lord Fred.
"Those are communities in the region that I came from," Chuck said. Fortunately by this time, he and Fred were acquainted enough that Chuck realized that his new friend was definitely from another place and time in the multiverse. "Like I was saying, I was at a diner called Arnold's when the lights went out. It was incredibly dark that night, and if you managed to make it home without getting lost or getting hurt, you were lucky as heck."
"Chuck, you never made it home, did you?" Fred asked.
"No, I didn't. To this day, I still have no idea where I'm at, and it's been years and years since that night. I've tried calling my family a few times since the blackout, and I haven't been able to locate anyone since, well, probably 1979 at the latest. I don't know what happened to Mom and Dad, or if Richie and Joanie ever got married. I just hope they haven't forgotten that I still exist!"

Lord Fred stops to ponder things. Several minutes pass.

"Chuck," Fred finally speaks, "I think the first thing the two of us need to do right now is determine exactly where in the world we are. After that, it's a matter of finding the closest major community to get the ball rolling so that you can finally go back to Milwaukee, and where I can figure out how to get back to my own time and place."
"I think that road sign should tell us something," says Chuck, pointing to a sign on the left hand side of the lonely highway several hundred yards away.

Several minutes later, Chuck and Lord Fred have approached closely enough to be able to read the sign. A green and gold shield on the top of the sign read "National 95". A white sign below the shield identified this road as the "Great Northern Highway". Directions to two towns, two roadhouses, and a place called Perth, which was the most distant destination from where they stood, fleshed out the large green sign.

"Perth?" asked Lord Fred.
"I believe that's the only sizeable city on Australia's west coast, Fred," answered Chuck. "That doesn't explain how in the world I managed to walk all the way from Wisconsin to Western Australia in all of the years I've been gone. But wow, we're thousands of miles away from Perth at this point!"
"We don't have much choice now, Chuck," Fred answered.

  1. Chuck and Fred begin their walkabout.
  2. A few kilometers south, they encounter a sign that says "Staircase Room, 11". Directed to the east, Chuck and Fred walk down the dirt road to the staircase room.
  3. Suddenly...a vehicle appears out of nowhere.
