The figure coughed up a gallon of water and a couple of fish.
Chakotay lowered
his phaser and then helped the man to his feet. "Thank you," the man said,
bowed and then
shot a quick glance over his shoulder. "I wish I could stop and chat, but
I'm afraid you
caught me in the middle of a daring escape." "Escape?" Chakotay repeated,
"from
whom?" "THEM!" the man hollered and sprinted down toward the
entrance of
the cave.
The landing party was completely unprepared for the sudden appearance of ten fish-tailed humanoids rising from the depths of the lake on fountains of rushing water. Some held spears, others had swords, and the leader raised aloft a gold-green trident. "Fred!" the chief merman shouted out. But Fred was halfway down the passage. And Chakotay and the landing party were right behind him. The light from outside grew brighter and brighter as they neared the rocky opening. Fred threw another glance behind him and then yelled at Chakotay, "Those were the Mermen of the UnderLake. Tenacious sons-of-guns, but not too bright, lucky for me!" But then the light before them was suddenly cut off and a loud noise began to grow within the cave passage. Fred came to an abrupt stop, and the others nearly collided with him. "Fascinating," Seven commented as she gazed at what was blocking their way. Up ahead was a wall of rushing water, and it was headed straight for them.
