Josh didn't want to see all his work go down the drain, especially
since he was so
close to attaining his goal. Josh's hero was the late Dr.Soong who had
created the android
Data. This project had become almost an obsession for Josh. "I think that
would be
overreacting, Captain," the Ensign said. "This situation is not critical.
I think that perhaps
Seven of Nine's objections may be more personal in nature than she would
have us
believe."
"I suggest that it is you who takes this matter personally, Ensign," Seven replied. "I've never kept my feelings about the Borg a secret, Seven," Josh answered. "My father and two of my sisters died at Wolf 359. But I resent any implication that I would endanger the safety of Voyager in the pursuit of my research. I have in no way deviated from the protocols mandated by the Captain and Lt.Torres. Protocols which you yourself had a hand in drafting. Obviously those protocols were deficient, so now we need to review and correct them. We shouldn't just stop my work. Now I take complete responsibility for what happened today, and I'm the first to admit that it was both unexpected and alarming. But I'm working with the unknown and so little surprises should not be too shocking." "A crewman was attacked, Ensign," Janeway said. "I don't consider that a little surprise." Josh winced, "A poor choice of words on my part. What I mean is that the fact that there are unknown variables involved with my project should not be reason alone for discontinuing it." The Captain considered what had been said and then turned to B'lanna. "Lt.Torres, I want a complete assessment of what happened and any recommendations you have. After that I will make my decision. In the meantime, I want Lots42 kept on ice. Dismissed." B'lanna nodded and left the room. As Seven and Josh walked back to their posts she turned to him and said, "You have given him the designation Lots42. Why?" "It's an abbreviation of the serial ID I found on him," Josh answered. "And I figure it's as good as anything to call him. Do you know what it means?" Seven nodded, "Locus Theti Systems 42nd SubQuantum, it is a minor Borg operational function." And then she walked away. But Josh could easily tell that she wasn't happy.
