Seven was already with the Captain when Tuvok and Josh arrived.
Chief Engineer
Lt.B'lanna Torres was also there. Janeway had everyone sit down and then
turned to
Ensign Bieber, she wanted to get some facts straight. "The Borg that
attacked Neelix was
one of the drones you were using in your research?" she asked Josh. "Yes.
It's the only
drone that still has full bodily integrity. The others are all in parts,"
Josh answered.
Janeway folded her hands together, "But I was given to understand that none
of the drones
were animate. How did this one get up and walk out of the engineering
lab?"
"I believe I somehow activated a heretofore unknown commcon nodule," Josh said. "Its reanimation was in no way caused by systems regeneration. And that's the key point, Captain. It's not truly a Borg anymore. It hasn't come back to life to threaten us. In fact, it's not really alive. It's more like a walking zombie with only half-memories of what it once was." "You're sure that it can't assimilate anyone?" the Captain asked. "Absolutely not," Josh answered forcefully. "The assimilation nanites were the first thing I neutralized. I had no desire of becoming a part of the Collective. Also, over 30 percent of the drone's hardware has been removed. At the time of this incident, I had been realigning its neural network. Its higher brain functions had already been gutted, and I was attempting to reconfigure the brain structure so as to reprogram it for simple tasks. I had already tested a localized power up to verify that reinitialization was possible." "So you woke it up," Janeway commented. "Under the Chief's supervision," Josh added. "And everything went according to our expectations. I then shut off the power. And then, as I said, I modified some of the pathways of the neural network and after that I went to lunch. But I forgot something and so returned to the lab. That's when I found Lots missing and hunted him down." "His precautions were obviously insufficient," Seven spoke up. "His project needs to be discontinued and the drone disassembled."
