Belboz at Death's Door

Cecilia spent many hours sitting at his bedside, fearing that he had not long to live. Apart from her personal feelings of grief, she was naturally concerned about the implications for her kingdom of Belboz's illness. When Rogell heard the news, he might well be tempted to try to take advantage of the situation. Supposing he timed his assault for when she had gone into labour? The country would be left effectively leaderless against him.

Just before Belboz died, he briefly rallied and was able to speak to her for the first time in several days.

1. "This is not a natural illness," he told her. "I suspect that some magic user of great power is responsible."
2. "I believe that I have been poisoned," he said. "Someone working for Rogell, most likely."
3. "This is what you must do to safeguard the kingdom and your own position..."
4. "I would like to see my child before I die. Would you be willing to ask your doctors to administer a herb to bring on labour prematurely?"
5. "Our unborn child will be no ordinary child."
