"When our ropes fell away, Ardua and I both grabbed our swords. [770] But
when, an instant later, we were transported here, I found that mine had
been transformed into a walking stick. Someone has been playing with us:
my ears, your sketching compulsion, as well as our being sent here and me
losing my sword. I don't like it."
"Nor do I," Fred said. "But there's nothing that we can do about it now. We have to decide which way we should go." He blithely ignored the fact that his question about the stick had been responsible for delaying them. "We should head south, away from those wolves or whatever they are," Ardua put in. "Also we need to find shelter. It could get cold after dark, and it looks from those clouds as though it may rain. That would be bad news for all of us, but for Astra and me in particular." "I can see a light in the distance to the west," Astra said. "It's too far away to tell in this gloomy light, but it must surely be a dwelling of some kind. We may find shelter there." Just then there was a renewed burst of howling from the north. Was it closer this time?
