You and Paul retire to the TV room and assume your usual positions, Paul
spread out on the chintz sofa with one hand perpetually hovering just
above the bowl of kettle chips which has lain there as long as you can
remember, you perched on a plastic footstool, to the underside of which
are attached 323 pieces of used chewing gum. The television splutters into life and proceeds to spew out its usual cornucopia of auditory and visual delights as you and Paul settle down for the evening. At one point you find yourself asking why you can't plug in the ariel, but Paul merely raises a disappointed eyebrow and the rebellion is quelled. White noise and static always were his favourites and from time to time you have in the past found yourself being dragged into the world of the white flickering screen, imagining briefly that you can make out sounds and images: torture, executions, funerals, vivisection, murder, humiliation. But today these flights of fancy elude you and you gradually find your eyes wandering to other parts of the room, and in particular the darkest corner. Because even though you cannot see it you know what is in that corner:
