A glum mealtime ensues in Paul's kitchen. The eggs are, as you
suspected, a good 15 seconds too hard to dip toast into. However that
doesn't mean you don't try. You try sharpening the toast in a pencil sharpener in the hope that the bready point might penetrate the solidified yolk. You do not succeed. You almost ask Paul why you can't just use spoons like everyone else, but then you catch that look in his eye, that singular look, and you remember why you can't use spoons like everyone else, or even ask why you can't. By the time you eventually finish it is almost dark. Your coffee is now cold because of course you can't drink your coffee until you have eaten your egg. And because, having been made with cold tap water, it was never warm in the first place. Finally Paul speaks: "Next time" he announces, "we could have devilled kidneys."
