The shaft beneath the trapdoor was not vertical, but descended at an angle
of about seventy degrees. As Astra slid rapidly down it in total darkness,
she scrabbled at the stonework, trying to arrest her fall. But there was
nothing to get a grip on, and all that she succeeded in doing was breaking
a couple of fingernails.
But then her feet struck a horizontal surface - whether the floor or merely a ledge she could not tell in the dark - and with a painful jar up her legs her slide was brought to an abrupt halt. It seemed that whoever had set the trap wanted any victim of it to be trapped rather than killed. The slope was too steep for her to have any chance of climbing back up, and she was reluctant to risk going forward in case it was only a ledge that she stood on and she would plunge over the edge.
