Searching for a Consensus

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 52803

Some of the animals were of types that, no matter how hard they tried, had vocal arrangements that could not produce understandable speech. But Fred spoke to all that he could.

He found that there was no consensus. Some actually liked being animals; some did not like it but nobly were prepared to put up with being trapped forever in their current forms if it would mean an end to the dragon; still others hoped that some wizard might be powerful enough to change them back after the dragon was dead; others wanted the dragon to survive, and with it the hope that he might some day restore them to normal.

"You're kidding yourself," Valerie told a parrot who expressed this last point of view. "Why would the dragon ever turn you back? Nobody really knows why he transformed us in the first place, but we've no reason to think that he will ever change his mind."

Eventually Fred made up his mind:

  1. The dragon must die. After all, that was the quest he had been given. He would help Valerie.
  2. The dragon should be spared. He persuaded Valerie that he was right.
  3. The dragon should be spared. "But I don't agree," Valerie said. "And it's my decision, as I'm the only one with the power to kill him."
