After Life for Astra

Astra opened her eyes, pleasantly surprised to find that she was still
alive. Or was she? For her surroundings were unfamiliar and rather odd.
She was standing on a featureless and apparently never-ending surface of
some hard, grey material. Above her the sky was an equally featureless but
slightly lighter shade of grey. She was wearing a white knee-length shift;
her feet were bare. She felt well and was free of pain.
How had she got here? Indeed where was here? Was she in fact dead and this the after-life? Though this place bore no resemblance to how the after-life was described by her people's religion. Then she heard a voice, although she could see no-one. The voice gave the impression that it was speaking in capital letters. "WELCOME TO THE AFTER-LIFE, PRINCESS ASTRA." "Who are you? Please show yourself." "I AM DEATH. I FIND THAT MANY PEOPLE PREFER NOT TO SEE ME, BUT IF YOU INSIST..." "I do. I would prefer to see the person that I am speaking to." A tall figure in a long black robe became visible. Only its head and hands could be seen, the robe hiding the rest of the body. That was perhaps just as well, for the head was a skull and the hands were equally skeletal. Astra gulped. "It would indeed seem that you are Death," she said. "So what happens to me now?"
