It seemed sensible to investigate the crypt first, since that would be a
much shorter journey and also it was possible that they might learn
something about the mirror that would be helpful. So that was where they
headed first.
One thing that puzzled Amy was why the crypt should be located so far from any human settlement. For no human, apart from Amy herself, lived within many leagues of the dragon's caves. People were just too terrified of the creature. Perhaps the crypt was so old that it dated from a period before the dragon had taken up residence in the region? Then there was the question of why the dragon had not looted the crypt of all its valuables, which from Nigel's description he clearly had not. Had he never noticed the crypt, was the entrance too small for him, or could there be some other - more sinister - explanation? With Amy riding on Nigel's back, it did not take them long to reach the crypt. There might have been a door once, but it had long since rotted away, so there was no impediment to their descending the flight of stone steps that led down into the crypt. This was a tight squeeze for Nigel, but the underground chamber in which they emerged was quite roomy. Just enough light filtered down through the entrance for them to be able to see a number of stone coffins. Beyond that, against the far wall was the jewel- encrusted throne that Nigel had described.
