The Dragon Interferes

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 52292

"The reason I am here is very urgent," the dragon said, putting his head between them. He fixed his gaze on Fred, and if Astra was confused before, well: "As of now, you are the last dragon-slayer in the whole of Allaria. You therefore must be kept safe. I have been sent to help with that, as the being behind this doesn't see me as a threat to his plans. Or at least, that is what I assume from my current survival."

Astra held her head in her hands. She could hardly speak. "A dragon? Protecting a dragon-slayer? Surely Fred, even you can't believe this?"

Fred nodded slowly, saddened by Astra's obvious distress. "I'm afraid I do. If what he says is indeed true, and I'm the last of the dragon-slayers, then it would be in the dragon's best interests to keep me alive."

Astra was still clearly struggling. "Because of this cosmic balance thing? If these battles are so important to the stability of this region, then why didn't this god put some safeguards in place?"

The truth was, he did, if only on the side of the dragons. There was a family of dragons nestled safely in the bowels of the earth. Dragons only reared young once every one hundred years. Equilibrus, the god of balance, thus made sure they were protected from harm. Humans on the other hand had no such limitations. To the mind of Equilibrus, they were in no danger of ever being wiped out.

Once a dragon left its sanctuary, it was easy meat for this strange being that was causing all of the havoc. As the younger dragon had said, he had been sent out once it had been discovered a dragon-slayer had returned. The others feared that they might have been seen as a threat and killed as a result.

Certain knights that had been sent against the dragon had been allowed to live, such as Fred's father. These knights had had no children of their own at the time they were sent against the dragon, and therefore no heirs. If every childless knight was killed then there would eventually be no dragon- slayers left, and that was something that could never be allowed to happen. This, in turn, was why Fred and the others had been sent to that remote island. The reasoning being that Fred and Astra could start a family safe from harm. The dragons would also be safe in their sanctuary. What the dragons knew, and the humans did not, is that the god Equilibrus was asleep, and would remain so until the balance of the world was in such a state that it disturbed him from his slumber. It was evident that the strange being wanted to destabilise the planet as much as it could, would be so caught up with this dampener on its plans and therefore tarry long enough for Equilibrus to wake and set things right, dealing with the strange being in the process.

  1. What was this 'strange being'? Why was it here and what were its motives?
