Shovel Off To Buffalo

Fred dug a fifty foot deep pit when he hit a metal door. He couldn't tell if it was a door one could pass through or the top of a crate. But he figured he could open it by smashing the lock with the shovel.

What does Fred do?

1. Breaks the lock.
2. Ignores the door and digs horizontally and breaks out over a cliff.
3. Realizes he's trapped in the pit and screams in panic.
