Ambaric shook his head suddenly. "I'm sorry," he said. "Temporarily forgot
that I wasn't still in the Western Kingdoms." Fred and Astra looked at one
another, but said nothing. "What I meant to say is that I'm returning home
tomorrow and I have to travel an area that has recently become home to a
group of bandits." He absent-mindedly fingered a medallion hanging around
his neck. "To begin with, they wouldn't attack me, presumably fearful of
my magic. Now, I'm not so sure. You see, I come from an order that
abstains from violence. So I'm only capable of passive - or non-harmful -
magic. "To get to the point, I would like it if the Allarian knight would be so kind as to be my escort." "But even if you can't actively harm anyone, you can still use your magic to defend yourself, can't you?" Fred asked. Ambaric nodded. "So why would you need my help?" Ambaric smiled. "As a deterrent, of course," he said. "As an Allarian knight, you're one of the most feared soldiers in the kingdom. You would probably frighten them off." His smile grew wider. "Even better, they might think Allarian knights have been hired to protect travellers." He looked at Fred. "That is possible, isn't it?" "Yes," Fred admitted. Astra gave him a funny look. "The dragon only attacks during Spring. And apart from trying to kill him, there's not really much else to keep a knight occupied. It's better than having them fight each other," he defended. Ambaric cleared his throat and they turned their attention back to him. "As I was saying, the bandits might think that Allarian knights have been hired as escorts and this will mean that they'll lie low for a while. They're on a well-travelled route, and the respite would be welcomed." Fred thought for a bit. "We're travelling to Behjing in the Three Kingdoms," he said. "We were hoping to go straight across the border from Allaria to there." "That's not a problem," Ambaric said. "Once we've reached my home, I can conjour up a map for you." Astra finally spoke up. "If it's the only way I'm going to have even the illusion of clothing, I'm for it. What do you say, Fred?" Fred wavered a bit before reluctantly agreeing. "All right. I hope it doesn't add that much to our journey time."
