Seems she had temporarily forgotten that the dragon was keeping track of
their progress, and was aware of everything that was being said. As soon
as Astra announced to Fred that she was thinking of abandoning the mission
and that he should too, she was overcome by what felt like a searing pain,
and she almost collapsed. Well, it wasn't really a searing pain. The pain was a complex illusion, just like Astra's dress. It was a modification to a spell that Gana torturers used - in fact, they still did. Political and military prisoners were usually starved to within an inch of their lives, so when it came to the actual torture, many soon died. This was highly inconvenient, as it meant that any information they had died with them. So the mages came up with a spell that simulated torture - that made the prisoners think they were in pain, when in fact they weren't being harmed. Only thing was that the prisoners had to be blindfolded, otherwise that ruined it. All-in-all though, it was extremely effective. Minestus hated using it, as it was impossible even for him to tell the illusionary punishment from the real thing. He had to remind himself he wasn't really hurting Astra. On the other hand, it reinforced the image he was supposed to have. "Seems the dragon has other ideas," Astra gasped, as a concerned Fred helped to steady her. They heard the dragon's voice in their heads: Indeed I do. Carrying out the missions I set you is not optional. You cannot just abandon them. Any more rebellious thoughts like that, and I will have to punish you further.
