Apparently the crazed hermit had decided that he could find Frederigo
without Amy's help, for he now seemed to have lost interest in her. He was
shuffling towards the beach, his knife in one hand (he had left his
lantern behind at the spring, apparently thinking that he could manage
without it), muttering under his breath.
She must try to get to the beach ahead of him to warn Fred, she decided. But if she wasn't to get lost in the fading light then she daren't deviate from the rough path that she had followed on her outward journey. (She had thought initially that the path might have been worn by the local wildlife, but now it seemed possible that it might have been made by the hermit.) Staying on the path would mean running right past him, which would alert him that she was trying to warn Fred and the others. Could he chase her down before she reached the beach? Surely she ought to be able to outrun an old man like him? Amy realised that she could hesitate no longer. It wasn't far to the beach, and the hermit would reach it in no more than a few minutes. She dashed past him as fast as she could. Not knowing how closely he pursued her, she ran for the beach. Emerging onto the beach:
