"Frederigo! Here! Show me!" spat the man. Amy stepped back nervously, but the man drew out
a knife from somewhere within his robes and pressed it to her throat before she could even
register that he had moved. She stood still, afraid, barely daring even to breathe.
"How... how do you know him?" Amy asked timidly. The hermit tensed, and Amy almost flinched with fear but held herself back from making any sharp movements, in case he might see it as a threat. "It was him," he said. "They told me about him. He was the one I was sent for." Then, the hermit removed his knife from her throat and, muttering incoherently, began shuffling toward the beach. The part of Amy's mind that wasn't desparatley afraid for her life noticed how oddly ornate the knife was for someone who was wearing such simple and ragged clothing. It seemed to have golden patternwork on the side of the blade. This was just her luck. The only other denizen of the island was not only crazy but dangerous. Amy knew she had to get to the beach before the hermit reached her sisters and Fred. She was a good runner, but he'd proven much faster and stronger than she'd expected. Still, he seemed completely oblivious to the outside world at the moment.
