"No." The captain said firmly. "It doesn't matter whether it bothers her
or you. It bothers me. She's a foreign national, but more
importantly, she's a civilian. There's no way I could justify sending her
out into a potential combat situation." He held up his hand when Astra
made to object. "I'm not suggesting for one moment that you're not capable
of carrying it out. But you've got to see my position here." There was complete silence. Charles and Henri could see his mind was made up. Astra seemed ready to argue with him, but a warning look from Henri stopped her. When the captain stood, they realised they were dismissed, so they got up and left the office. Once outside, Henri pulled Astra to one side. "Before you say anything you might regret, I'll tell you I respect his decision. You and I might not like it, but I believe it was the right one. Besides, if he had sent you, you wouldn't be back before the relief arrived. No doubt that was weighing on his mind as well." Astra sighed, but conceded the point. "You're right of course," she said. "But I don't like feeling useless."
