Fred turns. In the dim light, he can just see the face of one of the other
prisoners looking
down at him. Damn! He had thought that everyone else was asleep. He
recalls that this
man goes by the strange name of "Bugsy".
"What yer doin'?" Bugsy asks him. Seeing no point in denying the obvious, Fred whispers (hoping not to wake anyone else): "Looking for a tunnel." Bugsy chuckles. "Yer really are crazy. Yer think the police build their cells complete with escape routes? Look, I'll show yer." Bugsy is about 220 pounds of solid muscle, and he easily lifts the flagstone and puts it down to one side. Then his jaw drops. A hole descending into darkness has been revealed. Metal rungs have been hammered into the side of the hole. From their rusty state, no-one has made use of them for a very long time.
