Rondel and Sigurd fled into the trees. Sigurd swore profusely as he ran,
and Rondel stopped to cast a final wistful glance at Amy before following
him. "It looks like you scared them off." Nigel later said to Amy as she was waking up. "It wasn't me this time. It wasn't my fault." "Of course not." Amy sighed, absentmindedly stroking his leathery hide. "Don't worry, Nigel. Don't worry. At least we still have each other." It took a while to bury Lord Marcus, but finally it was done. Amy said a final prayer over his grave, and then she and Nigel settled back into their comfortable, familiar routine of living off the land. Another year passed. Amy turned 21, and had become quite tanned and muscular from handling sword and bow. Her old clothing had disintegrated completely, and she fashioned for herself a bikini top and shorts from various animal furs. She took to wearing flowers in her hair, and even made a wreath of flowers for Nigel to wear. But as days passed, her erstwhile raptor companion grew more and more depressed. "I miss my home." he explained to her once. "I miss my mum and dad. I wonder if I'll ever see them again?" That night they cried together. Then one day...
