"With your background you might think so, but..." Before the captain could finish his sentence there was a knock at the door. "Excuse me," he said to Astra, then - more loudly: "Come!"

The captain's second-in-command entered. "The party that you send to find Henri has returned, Sir," he said.

"So soon? Surely there hasn't been enough time for them to get to him and then bring him and his prisoner back?"

"No Sir. They had a bit of bad luck. They hadn't got very far when their tracker turned his ankle in a rut. He's damaged it so badly that he can't put any weight on it, and they had to carry him back. The rest of them reckon that they wouldn't be able to find Henri without him, and he's the only really good tracker that we have - other than Henri himself, of course. I don't suppose that you'd reconsider letting the Princess go with them to guide them to the spot?"

1. The captain considered for a moment, then said: "Very well. It seems that I have no alternative."
2. The captain instantly said: "No, she can't go."
