Something Exciting

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 5047

That night, back in the men's cell, Fred is lying awake on the hard dungeon bed, staring at the cieling. It's been a long, strange day, and he's exhausted from trying to fend off the attacks and the stares of these barbarians who have been locked in his cell with him. He's overheard them in conversation, attempting to interpret their strange language -- apparently a close variation of his own -- and trying desperately to sort out everything that's happened to him. It's all so strange... he's obviously in a very distant land, far from his home.

As he's turning all of this over in his mind, he gradually becomes aware of a scraping sound coming from the floor below his bed. Then he hears a loud, hollow CLUNK and a shuffling noise. He quickly gets off the bed and instinctually reaches for his sword, remembering too late that the dungeon guards took it from him when they locked him in here.

He sees two men coming from under the bed, dressed in the strange clothing of the culture. One of them carries an odd-looking rod that casts a ray of light over the room -- Fred assumes it's a torch or perhaps a magic wand of some sort -- and the other carries one carries one of the metallic office that the "police officer" who arrested them had. As Fred gets a better look at the first one, he recognizes him as Sir Seeker. The other one looks strangely familiar as well, but he can't tell where he's seen him.

"Fred!" Sir Seeker whispers. "Fred, is that you?"

"Yes," Fred says. "Are you Sir Seeker?"

"Yeah, Sir Seeker says. "We've come to break you out of prison. We're sorry we ever got you into this mess."

"Who are 'you?'" Fred asks, carefully kneeling down and approcahing the bed. Now that he's closer he can see that Sir Seeker and his companion have moved a loose panel from over a hole in the floor. "Are you the 'authors?'"

"Well, kind of," Sir Seeker says. "We belong to the Liberation of Underground Authors United, the LUAU. We're a vigilante group of authors dedicated to the freedom of authors and characters. This is my compatriot, Sir Lots42."

The man waves.

"What about the dragon?" Fred asks.

"We're currently pooling our resources to fight the dragon," Sir Seeker explains. "The Continuity Police forbid us, the authors, from interfering directly in the affairs of this -- or any -- storyline, but the LUAU is organizing a secret underground resistance to combat the dragon. That's why we need you and Astra; you can act as agents where we can't"

Fred hears mumbling in the bunk above his bed, and he realizes that his and Sir Seeker's conversation must be disturbing him. In fact, Fred is suprised that he hasn't woken up already. He quickly scrambles toward the hole and climbs inside, replacing the stone behind him.

  1. Fes, Sir Seeker, and Sir Lots42 crawl through a series of underground tunnels toward Astra's cell...
  2. ...but before they get they're they run into the prison guards...
  3. ...or the dragon's minions...
  4. ...or the Continuity Police.
