Fred's first thought had been that if Princess Yaiviane had been waiting
for three years to be rescued, then it wouldn't hurt her to wait a few
more hours whilst he dealt with the Dragon. But Yaiviane obviously didn't
see it that way, and King Emry probably wouldn't either. Besides, if she
had only recently escaped from the Dragon, [16130] then the beast might
well be searching for her, so he ought to take her out of the caves and to
a place of safety. Therefore he told her that he would take her home.
"The exit from the caves isn't far," he said, leading the way. "We have to go around the edge of the lake, then up a twisting passage with a stream running down it, then up another short tunnel, and then we'll be outside. So have you been a prisoner of the Dragon for the whole three years that you've been missing? If so, you may be able to tell me much about him that would help me in my quest."
