Success - Or Perhaps Not

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 50385

Astra was both surprised and rather impressed that Hesht had taken the initiative like that. She had to give him credit for his quick thinking. And - remarkably - he had somehow managed to avoid any stuttering, which might have given the game away. If his deception was successful, they would even gain five silver pieces out of it, which would be bound to be useful later on.

They had to wait a few tense moments before Gordie responded. "Leave the pieces by the tree? I suppose after that you want me to make myself scarce for a short while, so that you can collect them without risking me seeing you. Very well. I will give you about ten minutes (*), as well as I can estimate it, which should be ample time. I will expect you to be gone by the time that I return."

That wasn't so good. Astra and Hesht both knew that they were unlikely to become sufficiently mobile in such a brief period as to be able to get away. "Make it thirty minutes," Hesht said, compromising between what might be acceptable to Gordie and how long he thought that they would need before they would be able to walk.

* Durations have been converted into minutes for the benefit of the reader. Naturally our present day units were not in use in Hespan.

  1. "All right."
  2. "Why so long? Hah, I know! You're bluffing, aren't you? You must have been caught in the river and now you can't walk." With that, Gordie resumed walking towards the stand.
