Ruin, Sweet Ruin?

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 49617

Any dreams of being reunited with the remaining members of his family were dashed when they appeared in front of Montefort Castle, for the castle was a ruin, a shadow of its former self. Only one of the corner towers was still partially standing. The ground for hundreds of metres around was scorched and blackened. Astra stood still unsure what to do, while a distressed Fred rummaged through the ruins of what had once been the most impressive castle in the entire duchy.

Fred could find no sign of any bodies, so whoever had done this must have done something with the remains. Considering what had been done, it was easy to say that it had been the work of the Dragon, but Fred wasn't so sure. The Dragon attacked their lands to be sure, but it'd not shown any signs on going on a ramage and destroying everything sight, seemingly being content with being a royal pain-in-the-butt. Astra chose that moment to walk up to Fred and he found out that she felt the same way - it was as if someone was trying to frame the Dragon for the damage caused, though there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to it.

Just then, they heard the galloping of a horse approaching. Turning, they found it was a young page, who Fred recognised as Wilkes, from the King's court - not exactly someone you'd find on a fine horse as this one appeared to be. The page seemed to do a combination between dismounting and falling off, before moving his ungainly body towards the pair.

"Lord Fred, you have returned!" The young man exclaimed somewhat redundantly.

"Calm down and catch your breath, Wilkes." Fred ordered. Within a few minutes the page had done so. "Now, tell me," Fred continued, "how long have I been away?"

"Must be around three years, sire," the page told him. "Around a year ago, some unknown force laid waste to much of the land, starting with the destruction of this duchy. Leading many to believe the Dragon has been behind it, the House of D'Honaire being a thorn in its side more than most."

"How come you happen to be here?" Astra asked.

Wilkes looked at Astra and tried not to blush. "Well, my lady," he ventured, "young pages such as myself have been sent out to scout the land to see if there's any survivors. All the able knights and other fighting men are tied up proterting Caemlyn."

  1. The three talked some more.
  2. Wilkes excused himself and said he'd be back with more horses.
