The Never Ending Quest - Episode 49195

Meanwhile...

The King prepared to tee off at his favorite golf course - one that he had personally overseen the construction of . 1,000 sprawling acres of vibrant, freshly cut grass (that had once been 1,000 acres of sprawling, peasant-infested ghettos) relieved by the intermittent patch of woods or lake or the occasional sand pit, right outside the Palace. To his credit, the King had hired some of the displaced commoners to upkeep and maintain the pristine grounds. But of course he didn’t pay them well.

“Boy, I tell you what,” he told his longtime confidant, the jaded Duke Zular Molllari of the duchy Trescent. “That Drederigo’s busting my royal balls again.”

“Oh?” queried an intrigued Duke Zular. “How so?”

“Well, you know,” the King drawled tiredly. “That whole ‘Dragonslaying’ fiasco he had me send his sniveling little alcoholic brat on. You and I know the last thing we want is Minestus dead. The miserable old wretch may kidnap a few stuck up virgin prudes in the dead of night, burn a few fields here and there, drink up a few rivers, trample a few forests, and devour a few villages. But the power vacuum that would follow in the wake of his demise would be filled by entities I dare not even speak of.”

Zular scratched his well-defined chin and mulled over the King’s cryptic remarks. “And your point?”

The King let out a pompous sigh. “Yes, yes, my point is that Drederigo assured me that his son would most certainly fail in this endeavor. And to secure the agreement, he swore by the scared ‘pinky oath’ that it would not come to pass. I, of course, had to agree to this little arrangement or Drederigo threatened to go public with our little plot to dispose of my brother Cederik, the rightful heir to the throne, ages ago - right after my father’s premature death. But why? Why would Drederigo do such a thing to his own son?”

Zular yawned languidly and shrugged. “That’s actually not that interesting,” he droned. “Of course Lord Fred is going to die. That was a given. Who cares why? And I already knew the rest of that crap. Just hit the damn golf ball.”

An injured look came over the King’s pale face. “Well @#&* you, anyway, Zular,” he spat. “You’re such a bastard sometimes.”

Zular studied his fingernails with disinterest and yawned once more. “Just hit the damn golf ball.”

Oooh, the plot thickens! Or whatever.
