the light at the end of the tunnel

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 4916

"We shall go left," said Lord Fred and the other two followed. Their pace was indeed slower than before. The heaving of their chests became less as did the feeling of weakness in their lungs. ~~I've got to exercise more often!~~ thought Fred to himself.

The tunnel stretched forward and Fred took out another torch to light the way. The way was dreary to say the least, and the shadows caused by the torch reared themselves into ugly shapes that seemed to reach out and try to grab the trio. Luckily for them, shadows on walls were only that: shadows.

The tunnel opened up a little and there was a turn to the right. The three looked into that darkness and smelled something queer coming from within. It smelled of fire and water and something else. "Is that soup?" asked the troll. "Only if you think cooked dog is a delicacy!" said Belboz.

The troll then turned to the necromancer with a look of anger and pain. "What are you insinuating?" he said. "Why nothing! you overgrown monster," responded the wizard. "Why you!" screamed the troll. "My name is Sir Gregorio Vichenzi Lupus the IV and I am NOT a monster!!!"

"Quiet you two!" yelled Lord Fred. "Squabbling will get us nowhere but dead! We need to work together. Now cousin, calm down. And you, Belboz, leave him alone. We've all had to face horrors and disasters, we've all suffered one way or another. Let us save our anger for the dragon!"

They continued down the tunnel until it seemed to slowly edge its way upward. Soon they could see the darkness turn an ashen grey and then that greyness became lighter and lighter. Their pace picked up and finally the threesome found themselves running towards a light, a light at the end of the tunnel!

The three of them exploded out of the cave-tunnel and into daylight, beautiful daylight! They breathed in fresh air and kicked at the loose sand under their feet. They laughed and even hugged! Unfortunately their abrupt arrival to that particular cave entrance/exit (which just happened to be situated on the upper cliff of the southern exposure) caused the ground to shift under the new weight. This in turn began a chain reaction which resulted in a minor landslide. Rocks, dirt, dust and three very surprised persons went tumbling down the mountain and they didn't stop until three minutes and sixty feet later.

Belboz looked up a little dazed and said, "Hey Honey, are we there yet?"

  1. "Well, that all depends on who you're calling 'Honey'" said a voice to their backs.
