Another Chance to Cheat Fate?

Fred bid farewell to Khakaa, the spirit he had come to know for such a
brief period of time, and decided that he would have to follow Astra back
to her kingdom and try to find some way to destroy her life another way.
It simply didn't seem fair. For some time the guards led Astra toward the
surface of the cavern, and when they emerged, Fred saw that it was dark.
With a knot in his stomach born of sudden horrfic realization, he knew
midnight to be drawing dangerously near. Astra turned to face her only
remaining companion, the doomed ghost of Fred. "Life really isn't fair,
is it?" she asked him with a smile and a shrug. "And so I betrayed my
people and you, and now I return to them as though nothing ever happened.
Lucky me. You, however..." She chuckled. "You're in for your little
nightmare in a only a few minutes; the one I put you through, in fact.
Poor, poor Fred. You must really hate me more than anything." Fred did
indeed feel his anger boiling within him to a dangerous level, but what
could he really do? He was helpless. Astra turned around, laughing to
herself and walking away. It was then that Fred was startled to see a
luminous form materialize near him, pulsing with radiant energy. "Do not
be alarmed," the thing said as Fred stared in shock. "You have only one
minute until you must relive your own death at Astra's leisurely whim. If
you want to break this cycle, you must listen to me carefully, and right
away, because it is your only chance..." "What do you want of me?" Fred
demanded. "There is a favor I will ask," the being told him,"but this is
something we can address once my deed is done. I can send you back in
time, back to the point in time just moments before your own death...but
you will be sent back in the body of another, as your own body will be
paralyzed at at Astra's mercy." Fred nodded vigorously. "Anything!" Fred
said. "Just help me, and I will do anything I can for you in return." "So
be it," spoke the being, and with a flash of light, Fred found himself
transported back into the past. Fred found himself in the familiar cavern
where he had originally met his fate, and though things were much the same
as they were then, they were somehow different as well. "Fred..." he
heard Astra's voice say quietly from somewhere across the cavern. "I know
you know." Fred's heart knotted in his chest as he saw himself lying on
the rock ground of the cavern a distance away, Astra kneeling beside him.
He saw himself lying there as he must have looked, his eyes filled with
helpless terror as Astra planted her hands over his mouth one on top of
the other, and pinched his nose shut, intending on finishing him off
without much of a problem. He started walking toward the spectacle, but
stumbled, realizing that his new body was going to take some getting used
to. He looked down with a sudden startle to discover that he was now in
the body of...
