Fred was unable to get Astra's attention as she strained uselessly against
her chains. She had weakened considerably, Fred saw, and if she had not
been able to free herself after the first day of her incarceration, such
attempts would be all that more futile now. She looked as though she had
not eaten in some time, and her face had sunken in from malnutrition.
Fred wondered if she regretted betraying him, and the reward she had
garnered for her efforts. She could have fought on the side of good, and
died an honorable death, or even could have lived a long and prosperous
life. Instead, she was to be executed. It was only fitting.
"So that's her," Khakaa commented. Fred nodded.
"We won't be able to get her attention," Khakaa told Fred. "There are
a few spirits that have the power to do so, but they are only the very
powerful indeed, whose powers have grown enough that their influence is
far-reaching even to mortals. To ones such as us, there is no hope of
contacting the mortal world. However, we can always watch and observe."
"If she is executed," Fred said thoughtfully, "is there the possibility
that her spirit will also be damned to wander these caverns reliving her
own demise, just as we must do?"
"It is possible, yes," Khakaa mused. "Very possible."
Fred dwelled on this. He would return the next day and go to watch her
execution then, and see what her death wrought.
