Sure enough, before long the dragon appeared, flying along the tunnel for
his daily
exercise. When he was directly beneath her, Astra leapt, hoping that she
could land
on his back. If she could do that, she should be out of reach of his
claws, teeth
and flame. Then with any luck she could force her sword through his scaley
hide and
deal him a mortal blow, before he could gather his wits sufficiently to
use a spell
against her. That might mean her own death, if it caused the dragon to
plunge to the bottom of the canyon far below, but she was willing to pay
the price.
