"He doesn't look much like a gnome," Astra said. "That's his name: N-O-M-
E," the girl
clarified. "Can't he speak for himself?" Astra asked. "He'd far rather
not," the dark-haired
man said. Astra felt that the conversation had not begun well. Perhaps it
would
improve. "So you're responsible for us being here?" she asked. "How and
why?"
<p.At that point they were interrupted by a groan. Fred was coming round.
Astra helped
him to his feet and apologised. "Well," said Fred, "I suppose having found
out
that you hated being called 'Carrots' as a child, I really shouldn't have
kept calling
you that."
Geena and Devis then explained to Fred and Astra that, as the result of an improbable series of coincidences, they and Nome had been given the duty of travelling through time to search out and frustrate the forces of evil. The evil cloud called up by the dragon's master had come to their attention, and they had snatched Fred and Astra out of harm's way in the nick of time.
