On the open sea

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 4806

~~Fifty years!!~~ thought Fred to himself as he gazed over the rail of the merchant ship that his children were able to lead him to. The vision of his wife, tears in her aquatic eyes, was still fresh in his mind. He recalled their first garden, how she taught him the ways of the merfolk. How he laughed when she caught some sea-horses the same way he had caught dogs in Suffex. He had marveled at the way they cultivated the sea-star and the anemone. His mind's eye drifted to the birth of his first child. Then his second, his third, his fourth. He had had a good life.

The sea wind whipped about his ears reminding him of his new surroundings. It had taken a while for him to readjust to breathing straight air, his many years under the sea had been one of air mixed with salt-water. Worse than that was feeling gravity all over again. That's why he was leaning against the rail, his legs just weren't strong enough to hold his body. Fred looked down upon himself, he inspected his feet, his knees and legs, his stomach, his arms. The clothing his children had given him as a going-away gift fit him to a tee. Yet underneath the clothing was an old man. ~~I am 62 years old!~~ he thought.
