Retreat Is Cut Off

"I don't like the thought of blundering about in the dark in areas of the pyramid where we haven't already been. We might easily fall and break our necks. At least we know that there are no obvious hazards back the way we came."

But just then they heard a drawn out creaking noise behind them. Feeling their way back, they found that only a short distance from where they had been standing a heavy stone door had sealed off their retreat. They could find no way of opening it. Their choices had been reduced to staying where they were, or taking the golden stairs either up or down.

1. They remained where they were.
